NPK chemical fertilizers
N P K
The biochemistry of N and P:
Nitrogen and phosphorus help form the basic building blocks of plant and animal cells. Start with carbohydrates (C-H-O) and add nitrogen and you get things called nucleobases and nucleosides (C-H-O-N). These provide some of the simple building blocks of larger protein chains. They provide the 4-molecule alphabet of DNA and RNA: cytosine (C), adenine (A), guanine (G), and thymine (T). But with out another essential element, cells still can't create sentences with that alphabet.
Add some phosphorus, though, and suddenly you can produce nucleotides and the building blocks of life. You get the fundamental units of biological energy systems, ADP and ATP. Phosphorus helps broker fuel storage and delivery in plants or in animals. It's also involved in larger protein molecules: RNA and DNA and the magic of life on this planet.
